Probably a Noob question here, but I am unable to get my Roland Integra 7 to work with Studio one. I have a Focusrite 18i20 interface, and I have tried all different combinations of using the USB connection form the Integra 7, the MIDI ports etc. I'm using an older Ensoniq ASR88 keyboard as my controller also if that makes any difference.

Many years ago I used Cakewalk Sonar and it was pretty straightforward, you had your MIDI out of the controller to the midi in of the sound module, then thru to the DAW via the computer's MIDI interface. Does anyone have a "step by step" on how to get this configuration to work?

Thanks!

Michael

I do not think you can use the USB connection on the Integra as it conflicts with the 18i20 audio.  I have my Integra and several other modules hooked up and they work quite well. (with some complexity-see below).  I use an 18i20 also along with an Octopre.

1.  Hook up the audio outs of the Integra to the 18i20 ins (one or more pairs)

2. Hook up the MIDI out of the 18i20 to the MIDI in of the Integra

3. Add the Integra audio pair(s)in the S1 Audio Setup screen (Song/Song Setup)

4.  Add the Integra to the S1 External Devices list (Studio One/Options/External Devices)

5.  Add a stereo audio track to a song.  Insert a Pipeline plugin to the track and select the Integra you set up in the Audio Setup as the input, then set the track's main input to "None".

6. Add an instrument track and open the Inspector (F4).  Where it says "Output" the External Instruments list will show in the "Output" pull-down, select the Integra.  Also Select the MIDI channel.

While this instrument track is selected, S1 should now send MIDI data to the Integra on the channel specified and return the audio to the pipelined "Aux" track.

The complexity:  To automate program changes takes a lot of work.  Most MIDI modules require sending them MSB,  LSB and Program Change data to select a new bank/patch.  Many older MIDI software apps did this behind the scenes. S1 has no pre-defined modules with their banks and has no master bank setup screen (like Logic) so you have to manually send the MSB and LSB and Program data in the automation of the track to set the bank/patch for that track.  For all external instrument tracks I add Bank MSB, Bank LSB, Program Change and Volume automation lanes when i first add the track.  Other MIDI controllers can be added as needed.  Bank MSB/LSB numbers can be found in the Integra manual in the Patch lists.

However, there is a catch.  This is because S1 does not do the standard MSB and LSB control numbers (1-xxxxx), but uses a scaled renumbering system of 1-100 (just for MIDI controller data).  You have to convert your raw MIDI numbers to the new scaled numbers.  The documentation is not clear on this and I think I remember finding this on the Presonus Site somewhere.  I used the formula they provided but it did not always work so I went through a process of incrementally sending MSBs/LSB's/ to my modules to get the correct ones to use.  I entered these into a spreadsheet which I refer to when setting up a new external instrument track.  The upfront work I did (several days!) really paid off.

If you feel OK with fiddling with the module's front panel to select sounds then this is not needed.  I automate everything so when I open a song it always has all the sounds ready to go.

Below is the bank data.  Good Luck!

I forgot to say you need to set up your keyboard in the External Instrument screen also.  You should have an External MIDI interface to have both your Ensoniq keyboard and another module because you need two separate MIDI connections. and the 18i20 has only one.  I use a MOTU MicriLite USB.  Studio One sees it via Windows.

(Or--- you could hook up the MIDI out of the Ensoniq to the MIDI in of the 18i20.  Then the MIDI out of the 18i20 to the MIDI in of the Ensoniq and the MIDI through from the Ensoniq to the Integra MIDI in.  This was will require selecting a limited number of MIDI channels in the External Instrument screen for them so they both don't receive on the same Channel.

Hi Again.  My previous answer was not complete.  The Integra does work with USB for Instrument tracks and for the Editor.  My previous answer is correct for non-USB use for all external MIDI devices.  Below are the steps to take to set up the Integra via USB.  The only thing is that you cannot use the USB audio return as it conflicts with the AISO driver required for the audio interface.  Good Luck!!!

SETTING UP THE ROLAND INTEGRA 7 IN STUDIO ONE

1. Download and install the Integra editor from the Roland Website.

2. Hook up the audio outs of the Integra to the audio interface ins (one or more pairs).

3. Hook up the USB of the Integra to the computer.

4. On the Integra, go to System/USB Driver and set it to "Vender", it will send a new driver to the PC.

In Studio One:

5.  Add the Integra to the External Devices list (Studio One/Options/External Devices), Name it "Integra 7" and select the "Integra 7" (found in Windows by Studio One) to the "Send To" pull down, select all channels.  Leave the "Receive From" blank.

6. Create a new song (or use an existing one)

7. Add the Integra audio pair(s)in the S1 Audio Setup screen (Song/Song Setup) (from step 2).  You can set them up as pairs or as individual mono ins (for Motional Surround), pairs and monos can be set up sinultaneously.

8. Add 2 instrument tracks

9.  From the Browser/Instruments list, drag over the "Roland-7 Editor Ver 2" to the first new Instrument track, the plugin should be there from Step 1, if not then you need to add the EDITOR'S folder to VST Plugins/Locations in Options).

10. Open the VST Editor and go to Utility/Device and set the In and Out to "Integra-7 CTRL".

11. Select the second new instrument track, in the inspector, in the Output section, select the "Integra 7" (from step 5).  Also set the appropriate channel.

12.  Add a stereo audio track to the song.  Insert a Pipeline plugin to the track and select the Integra desired audio In(s) (from step 7) as the input, then set the track's main input to "None". Do this for each input of the Integra's audio outs connected to the interface

While the second Instrument track (from step 11) is selected, the MIDI notes from your controller keyboard will send out to the Integra on that channel, and the audio will return via the Pipelined audio track.  The editor can be accessed any time independently from the other tracks.  Multiple Integra instrument tracks can be set up for each channel configured on the selected Integra Studio Set.

This assumes the MIDI controller keyboard is also set up in "External devices" properly.

I have an additional addendum, sorry for all this stuff.  I have been able to implement the USB connection with the editor with pretty good success.  The editor is quirky with unpredictable communication issues, but it makes selecting patches and editing basic stuff much easier.  Studio One is not the problem, the editor is not perfect.

However, if you choose to use a MIDI only approach for selecting presets, I realized a while ago since my original post, that putting bank select data directly into the regions where the note data is, makes it possible to used the vendor published MSB and LSB bank select parameters without the translation to percent  (which is required in Studio One's stand alone automation tracks) For some reason, they are different with regard to MIDI controller data.  I had a ticket with Presonus on this and they are aware of it.

Without selecting banks for legacy MIDI modules, you are forced to use the front panels, which is very disruptive to work flow.
