Help with mixing rap vocals

This week I finally got around to testing my microphone in my dorm. Still testing vocal volume to not be too loud as to annoy people. That being said, I tested part of a verse of a song I knew decently, but I couldn’t get the vocals to sound right, which I’m pretty sure is an EQ issue. I understand what EQ is, and that you need to boost or remove frequencies as needed, but I think the issue is my ears aren’t trained? Without proper EQ, my compression makes it loud but not sit properly. I’m using pro tools stock plugins if that helps.
