Can the rack ears on the Quantum interface be removed?

I want to be able to transport it in a backpack but the ears make things a little difficult. If the ears can come off without affecting the structural integrity it would save me a lot of trouble/ money. Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are screws securing the rack mount ears.

Could them be removed from the Quantum 2626 as well?
