How do I enable the grayed out Insert/Sends/FX button on the side of the recording tracks?

The Inserts|sends|FX button on the side of my recording tracks is grayed out. How can enable the button to have the inserts/sends/fx on the side of the track instead of over top? Thanks

Try changing the size of the channels (small/large) and then use the Expand option to see your sends on the right of the mixer channel.
