I own a studiolive Ai and a Presonus Rm16, do I need a avb control card installed on my console or can I use just a avb box to connect the two to use my Rm as a stage box

Yes. You will need the AVB Expansion card in both the Ai console and the RM Mixer so the RM will work as an AVB Stage Box.
