Automation I a very important thing in music production. Unfortunately, when trying to automate the pitch of an audio track it is not possible without getting a stairway effect. This feature is also available in DAWs like fl studio and is a huge workflow killer in studio one since you need external plugins like little alter boy to make it work. But even that often leaves you with weird stereo artifacts.

you can use melodyne as an insert effect .  then go to your automation dropdown and add melodyne . you can now automate pitch and formant . you must record the audio into melodyne first .  hope this helps
