AR series preamps?

The AR series mixers do not use XMAX preamps. How good are the class A pres in the AR mixers compared to XMAX? Was the decision not to use XMAX to keep the cost low?

Probably cost related. I believe the same pres are used in the AB usb, which are still pretty good.
