I setup a short, 4-bar looping track and want to now record a longer solo over the loop. The loop plays fine - the solo track doesn't progress past the 4-bars of the loop. How do I set the loop to play in the background while recording a long solo (3-5 minutes) on a different track?

Duplicate the loop over the timeline as many times as needed for the 3 minutes etc.

To do this, select the loop (or if on more than one track select all loops), then hit the letter D as many times as you need. This will repeat the loop. To record, turn off looping and simply record in a linear way on a new track for as long as you have repeated loop.

Thank you Scardanelli - that literally never occurred to me - duh. Appreciate the answer!

Not an answer but a question - is there a way to do what OP really wanted, and what I want - to play a loop indefinitely, record input to another track "live", and record the output of both (master out) as a final product?

I too need this feature.  ProTools can easily do this.  Copy and Pasting sections indefinitely is not a viable option.
