why is the sound going from the AudioBox USB 2x2 cutting in and out?

I have the AudioBox USB 2x2. Im using the original cable USB-B to USB-A, through a USB-A to USB-C non powered adapter.

I have a MacBook Pro late 2016 with only two USB-C ports, running macOS Sierra 10.12.5.

I have installed the latest updates for the AudioBox and Mac. I tried the interface on my old MacBook Pro and works perfectly.
