An expander is similar to a compressor in function; however it increases the dynamic range of signal whose amplitude has fallen below a specified threshold.  When used in conjunction with a compressor it smoothes the dynamic range.  If a compressor limits the dynamic ceiling, than an expander raises the dynamic floor thus creating a more evenly directed dynamic space.
