when I export my project to a wave file, the volume is very low

What do I need to do in order to hear it properly

Put a limiter on the post slot of the main out, and set the ceiling for -.3. You can bring up the main fader to get the rms level where you want it. Balance with the treshold setting so the music is completely crushed.

 

Not an ideal thing to do or worry about until mastering. Google loudness wars for more information on the subject, but at least now you have your answer.
