I can't see in the Notion manual any way of denoting a short solo passage for an instrument in a string piece.  Does it require a new stave to be generated?

You might want to create a new instrument and use the "Hide Resting Staves" option so that it only shows on that one page.  You will want to refer to page 11.5 in the User Guide for information on this feature.
