This article explains how to set up ReWire in Notion and some common problems.  Notion will run as a ReWire Host or Slave.  Most DAW's only run as a Host.  Ableton will run as a Slave.

Solution

Mac:

To configure Rewire in Notion, simply open Notion, go to Notion>Preferences, Audio, and check the box that reads "Enable ReWire."

In order to create a ReWire connection between Notion and another program, they will have to either be both 32-bit apps or 64-bit apps.  FYI, ProTools 9 has a 32-bit version of Rewire in the 64-bit version of the program.  If you would like to run Notion as a 32-bit app, simply ctrl-click the app in the Applications folder, go to "Get Info," and check the box to run as a 32-bit application.

Once enabled, Notion will put a file named "notion Device.bundle" in the Macintosh HD\Library\Application Support\Propellerhead Software\ReWire folder.  To troubleshoot, you can delete this file and re-open Notion to re-create it.

For ReWire to work correctly, you want to set both the Host and the Slave to use the same audio interface.  Remember that Notion runs at 44.1 khz.  If the Host is set to run at 48 khz., then Notion will play back a half step higher than it should.

Windows:

To configure Rewire in Notion, simply open Notion, go to File>Preferences, Audio, and check the box that reads "Enable ReWire."

It is good practice, and is sometimes necessary to run Notion, and maybe your host as well, as an administrator.  To do this, you can right-click the Notion icon and choose "Run as administrator."  To set this up permanently, you can right-click the Notion icon, go to Properties, and choose "Compatibility."  From here, simply check the box to always run the program as an administrator.  You will be prompted to allow the program to make changes to your computer each time you run the program.

In order to create a ReWire connection between Notion and another program, they will have to either be both 32-bit apps or 64-bit apps.  FYI, ProTools 9 has a 32-bit version of Rewire in the 64-bit version of the program.  If you need to run Notion as a 32-bit app, simply run the installer for the program and un-check the box asking if you would like to install the 64-bit version.  You can install both versions on your computer if you would like to.

The way ReWire works on a Windows machine is that a registry entry is made in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Propellerhead Software>ReWire that points to the location of Notions ReWireDevice.dll.  This file can be found in the Notion Program folder.  On some occasions, to troubleshoot a ReWire problem, you will need to delete this file and run the latest update for Notion 4 to recreate it.

You will want to make sure that you use the same ASIO driver in both programs.  If you are able to enable Notion as a ReWire device in your host but you cannot sync the two programs, this is more than likely an issue with your ASIO driver.  You may need to contact the manufacturer of your audio interface and download and install the latest driver.  If you are using a built-in soundcard or have an audio interface that does not support ASIO, you can download a free program called ASIO4ALL www.asio4all.com and set it as your ASIO driver in both programs.  This is also helpful in troubleshooting ReWire problems to be able to remove the audio interface from the equation.

Remember that Notion 4 runs at 44.1 khz.  If the Host is set to run at 48 khz., then Notion will play back a half step higher than it should.  If you are using Notion 5, you can go into the Audio Preferences and set the program to run at 48 khz.
