Question

I am a novice in need of a step by step method of setting up an external instrument track. Inserting a new mono track is straight forward. However, recording volumes vs. what is coming through my headphones are not properly aligned. Also, should plug-ins be used for initial track recording or added after the fact? Any advice is much appreciated.

This might help  I record with just effects on the track so the actual recording is dry. A lot of the time, I'll change the distortion and effects after it's recorded so it fits better with the rest of the song.

Thanks for the answer it was very helpful. It helped isolate where the problem lies, which is the interface between the StudioLive 24R (rack mixer) and the Studio One 5 software. I followed the YouTube channel and could only reach a max volume of -24 for my external bass and external guitar plugged in with a 1/4" cable (no mic). This was with the instrument volumes and all gains maxed out. It's loud in my headphones (disconnected them and looked at signals only) but the input into SO-5P is just too weak.

Is there an interface software that I didn't download but should have? Or a button that needs to be pushed somewhere?

I don't own that device, so I don't know if there's a button or knob. You might want to create a tech support ticket and ask them. It's pretty common to record at -24db to -12db but not with everything maxed! In the mean time normalize the track after you record it ( right click on the tracks audio data and it should be able to find 'normalize' under the audio tree.) and see how it comes out. You might want a preamp or to connect the direct out from your amp. Unfortunately, I just don't know. Sorry I can't be of much help.
