When "Z" is turned off. Volume is louder.

When the "z" is turned off when is the output much louder. Why is that?

Please provide a bit more detail about your issue.  There are two types of "z" monitoring- blue z and green z.  These will be hardware dependent according to your Audio Interface.  Suggested details you can add to help others help you - please provide details on which audio interface, which operating system you use, a brief CPU/RAM overview.
