I am running an Akai Professional MPK 249, a PreSonus Audiobox 44 VSL, and Finale 2014, on a Mac OSX 10.9.5. It is my understanding that when I try to connect my Midi controller (the Akai) to the programs on my computer (i.e. Finale), I am supposed to be able to manually drag and drop connections in the Midi Studio window under Applications->Utilities->Audio Midi Setup. When I drag a connection from the output arrow on my Akai icon to the Audiobox midi input arrow, there is no option to connect.

You will first need to ensure that your cable connections from device to device are correct.

Connect a standard MIDI cable to the MIDI Out port of your Akai to the MIDI In port on the back of the AudioBox.

Now, you need to assign your MIDI functions and controls within Finale, not the MIDI Studio in Utilities.

Every DAW will have its own audio and MIDI device settings.
