i'm having some issues with some eris e5s i purchased recently.  there seems to be a large area in the mids (vocals, spoken dialog) which is almost completely missing from the sound output.  i have tried both balanced and unbalanced output as well as apply different combinations of settings on the back of the speakers.  any ideas?

The areas that you're having issues with may be a result of reflections in your room. Consider balancing your room. This is done to ensure proper sound at the sweet spot in front of your mixing desk. You'll need a hardware stereo EQ and may need to get some baffles and acoustic tiles. There are plenty of resources on line to learn about how to balance your room.
