Question

I have a laptop that has enough cpu and memory but my drive is a 5400RPM which is going to be a problem.  I really can't afford a whole new system right now but wondered if  a  USB 3.0 external SSD... good one like a higher performance Crucial or similar would be a option.  Understand that it's not ideal but would the read speed would be better i think

Definitely.

Even back when I did remote recording ages ago (USB 2.0) the external hard drives did fine for multiple tracks.
