Given past issues with FW updates requiring the recovery process, I have not yet updated to v7049.  When the next update comes, will it be possible to leapfrog v7049 and use the on line process within UC Surface?

As of this date Feb 22, 2016. To answer your question, yes, when you get the next public release you will be able to use the online update (provided your mixer is registered with your my.presonus.com account) and you will not have to do a recovery, only an update will be necessary.
