If I subscribe to Sphere, do I own Studio One v5 in perpetuity after a couple of years? Is it rent to own?

No, It is just a pay to use service.

The only advantage you get is major software updates are going to be free and you will get everything that PreSonus makes or will make is future:

Studio One, Notion, Batch file converter, plugins, and expansion pack for their vst's, also they have some tutorials on using Melodyne, macros, and eq, compression more to be added later on.

You now can collab with other people with sphere being an inbuilt service where you just manually uploads of stems rather than the whole song file within Studio One.
