In Studio One, you use SampleOne as an instrument. You insert it on an instrument track then you add MIDI notes to the instrument track to trigger the playback of the sample. The editing you do inside of SampleOne controls how the sample is played when triggered with a MIDI note.
This is different than, say, taking a kick drum sample from a sample pack and then pasting it in on quarter notes in an audio track. Understand that audio tracks and instrument tracks are different.
You can, of course, do it both ways in Studio One if you choose, the overall point is just that SampleOne is an instrument.
