The input from both a dynamic mic (non-condenser) and line input sound distorted; no indication of "peak" or "clipping"

I have tried two different sets of headphones as well as using the speakers in the computer, so I am confident its not the monitoring system

This sounds like a driver problem, either with AudioBox driver, dated computer hardware drivers, or both. Please try the following:

  1. Different USB ports - some ports perform better than others
  2.  Uninstall/Reinstall Universal Control: http://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/articles/210044673-How-do-I-uninstall-and-reinstall-my-AudioBox-drivers-in-Windows-8-or-Windows-10-
  3. Install Universal Control 2.0.1: http://www.presonus.com/products/AudioBox-1818VSL/downloads
  4. Visit your computer manufacturer's webpage and check for updates to your USB controllers, BIOS, and motherboard/chipset
