Question

At the current time, you cannot assign the tempo track to an automation lane. However, you can use the pencil tool to draw in tempo data, either using freehand, or you can use one of the preset shapes, such as sine wave. 
 

But, I would like to be able to use an automation controller to vary the tempo in real time.  Ideally, it would be great to be able to use touch mode with a faderport fader to deviate from a reference tempo and have it snap back when released, but any assignable controller will do!

I find it very painful to edit the tempo track with its current interface.

You may want to edit your request and add the Feature Request tag so it has better visibility for the Dev team.
