So if I want to run the FOH on a wired laptop and use a ipad (mobile FOH support) and some iphones for for on stage monitoring I should just get a router instead of a WAP? And the reason being all these devices need to communicate with each other, which requires a router instead of a WAP?

You will want to get an approved router to perform what you want to do. Just any modem will not do.
