What hardware can I use to expand my RM16AI to 32 channels of input?

The StudioLive RM16AI actually has 16 digital inputs that you can use for virtual instruments in addition to the 16 XLR inputs onboard. We actually have a video on that setup here: 

If you wanted to add another 16 physical inputs to your RM16AI, you can cascade a second StudioLive RM16AI to your current one over AVB.

This is actually a question.

Can we cascade devices other than another RM mixer? For instance, can I use a FireStudio or another FireWire interface to access some more channels? Also, can I connect my laptop directly to the mixer through FireWire and route I/O in Ableton Live or other DAW?
