Random buzz with Studio 68c

I've recently been getting quick, random "buzz" sounds from my 68c, lasting about .5 seconds. I can hear them on my monitoring headphones and they show up in my recordings (Logic Pro). There might be 2 or 3 buzzes in succession, or they might come in longer intervals, like 30 seconds or more, but always just a quick buzzing sound. I haven't had this problem previously.

I've been using my Studio 68c for occasional podcasts and educational audio content for a couple years. Here's my setup. For mics, I'm using both an EV RE20 and a Shure SM7b, Fetheds with 48v phantom power, running into the 68c and then into my 2023 MacBook Pro (M2). There shouldn't be any random power draws on the circuit that I can think of. The electrical outlet is only shared with my MacBook's power brick.

I'm wondering if the AC power adapter for the 68c might be bad? The AC end of the power adapter never did plug fully into the little box that connects to the 68c. That part always seemed like a wonky part of the unit.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

1. Power Issues:

  • AC Adapter: Your suspicion about the AC adapter could be right. The loose connection between the adapter and the connecting box can cause fluctuations or noise in the power supply, leading to buzzing. Try a different adapter if you have one available or contact Zoom for a replacement.
  • Power Source: While you mentioned no other devices on the circuit, try plugging your 68c into a different outlet to see if the buzzing persists. This can help isolate any electrical issues in your current outlet.

2. Grounding Issues:

  • Ground Loop: A ground loop can occur when there are multiple grounding paths between your equipment. This can create a humming or buzzing sound. Ensure all your devices (mics, 68c, MacBook) are plugged into outlets on the same circuit. If using extension cords, make sure they are grounded.

3. Mic Preamps and Cables:

  • Phantom Power: Although you mentioned using Fetheads with phantom power, try lowering the phantom power level on your 68c or Fetheads. Sometimes higher phantom power levels can introduce noise in some setups.
  • Microphone Cables: Swap out your microphone cables with known good ones to see qatar visa check, if a faulty cable might be causing the issue.

4. Software and Settings:

  • Monitor Mix: Double-check your monitor mix settings in Logic Pro. Ensure you're not accidentally monitoring something that's introducing the buzz.
  • USB Connection: Try a different USB cable to connect your 68c to your MacBook. A faulty cable can sometimes cause unexpected noise issues.
