We have the Studiolive 2442 classic mixer with a mac mini attached through the firewire. Currently, we have an old ETA rack mount surge protector but I feel that we need to upgrade to one that is more reliable (I heard Surge X was really good).

Can you give us some pointers or recommendations?

As long as you find a conditioner or surge protector that can provide a grounded power sources with enough amperage to cover both the mixer and your computer you should be fine. If you are really nervous about the power situation in a particular room or venue, I would suggest that you find a good power conditioner with built-in voltage regulation to ensure a consistent and clean 120v of power. On a personal note, Furman is my preferred brand, but not at all a direct recommendation of PreSonus.
