Thanks for your reply! This worked for me. The trick was that using an Empty Song I had to

1. open Song / Song Setup / Audio I/O Setup panel and click in the grid to set Input 1 to Mic 1

2. Add a track, and click the track's Monitor/Record buttons to activate them.
