I see the site has a point system, what is it, how does it work?

The point system is a reward and recognition system. Points given for questions asked, answered and voted on. Points taken away for questions and answers voted down. This will help maintain good will on the site. Putting forth a positive effort to support good questions and answers will improve your standing on the leaderboard shown on the users page.
