How to switch off layering on a main track

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me. I’m trying to get the audio editing closer to Protools. When I copy and paste on a track I don’t want it to superimpose the audio on top on the current track I want it to actually replace it (I know how to make it only play only one audio clip by unchecking play overlaps). Unless I cut away the audio first where I want to paste I can’t crossfade it. It also makes the track look messy, in truth I can’t think of many instances where it would be useful to be able to see one track on top of another.

Any thoughts much appreciated

Thanks

Chris

Ps This is different to the ‘layers’ often referred to in others DAWs like Protools as playlists
