Question

I  have tried to digital patch aux 1 and 2 to one of the mic channels

but cannot do so

I can setup the user button to patch either of the aux channels to whatever channels and this works well but the digital patch I cannot figure out why I cannot patch either of the aux channels to any mic channels i:e patching aux1 to fader 5+6 and patching aux2 to fader 7+8

May I ask why you want to patch outputs to inputs? This makes no sense to me, but I don't know your goal. If you are talking about the User layer, where you can assemble anything in the order you like, the Owner's Manual will probably explain the "how to". Which mixer are you using?
