The manual shows the outputs of the Audiobox USB 96 directly driving a pair of speakers. Are the output power levels really high enough to drive a pair of studio monitors (in this case, Alesis Point Sevens) satisfactorily, or do I need to go through a power amp?

It won't drive my Cali Audio LP8s to max output, I'd say it's about half what they need or less. It's not a power amp, it will need powered monitors or an external amplifier if the monitors don't have built in amps. My monitors are powered and it still wont drive them hard enough using the ballenced outputs, I'm guesing the USB power is not quite enough.
