I ran out of channels on my studiolive 16.4.2 have a project slightly bigger around 20 tracks can you record a larger project

You can acquire another 16.4.2 and cascade them for more simultaneous inputs.

OR

You can record your 16 inputs to Studio One (or your other DAW), then monitor out of the 16.4.2 while recording more tracks on those same inputs.

you can use the aux inputs, tape-in and the talkback input for 7 more channels to the computer. In VSL you can select what you want to map to firewire sends 17-32. You will have to use a DAW like StudioOne to record everything including the extra channels. Capture is limited to the mixer channels plus one extra stereo pair.
