The new biggest trend in the DAW world is integration with the online world. Splice makes it easy for users of Live, Logic, and FL to automatically backup their project files to the cloud. Boy would I kill to be able to use that in Studio One. In addition, Bitwig is planning on adding online live collaboration, which is a feature that originated with a small open source DAW called Ohm Studio, it actually works very well aside from plugin compatibility which can be an issue. Avid seems to have solved that in Pro Tools though with their nifty plugin sharing. All the pieces are out there and working well, all they need is to be put together. Come on Presonus... heres your chance!!!!

I've wondered if the best way to handle the plug in issue might be to give the option of either having a rendered version of the particular track or leaving the plug in in an offline state.

Perhaps for the sake of efficiency, this could be selected as part of the song options on the "Original" host side - "Upload Rendered Versions of tracks that use third party plugins" or similar...

Well... what I was suggesting was something similar to the new "Plugin Sharing" that Avid added in Pro Tools 12. Though instability would be in issue in the early stages, it would be much much better than rendering audio for other people.

I have mixed feelings about this:

  • Live collaboration for composition works best in person, in the same room, improvising together.
  • Offline collaboration for composition, like for a film, works okay with VST Connect (Cubase), but much better if everyone is local and you have all the audio + video files on network storage.
  • Live recording of a vocalist online is already doable by other DAWs.
  • Automatic Backup of my project files online might be nice. But can I not do this with syncing my project folder to the cloud already?

A professor once told me this was a pipe dream and would never get off the ground. His reason was that composition isn't collaborative in nature. There's a lot of truth to that. Some various approaches to collaboration have come, but no one is hitting a home-run here. I'd much rather see S1 focus on other features honestly. But if they do something here, I'm hoping they innovate and do something unlike what others have tried. The more it can be simple and appeal to all users, the better IMHO.
