How do I connect speakers to an iMac when using Studio24c

I want to hear my Studio24c through external speakers - can they be connected via the outputs ?  I don't have an amp and the spreaders are not powered.

On the back of the 24c there are 2 main out jack (1/L & 2/R) if memory serves correct. I had mine connected to a set of Eris 4.5 Active Monitor Speakers using balanced cables.
