First, I am not very experienced in recording and so I am hoping for some detailed support as I have seen great knowledge here.

I have an RM32 rack mixer and S1 3 professional, which runs on a MacBook Pro 13" (3.1Ghz, Retina, Core i7, 16GB RAM, Thunderbolt & FW800). I have an older Mac that I use for UC Surface for the Mixer. The basic control functions for the mixer work very well in my opinion. The FW connection to S1 technically works too. So: UC-Mac is connected through ethernet to a router, so is the RM32 and that's how I control the mixer. The FW cable goes from the RM32 to the S1-Mac for recording purposes.

Nowhere have I been able to find what a good way of working is using S1 and the RM32, and how to setup S1, for recording my guitar tracks. I would like to do this in a way whereby I can simply record track 1&2. Go back, record track 3$4 whilst having recorded tracks 1&2 on the monitors, and then record track 5&6 whilst having tracks 1-4 on the monitors.

These might be beginner questions but I have spent significant time with the RM32 and S1 to try to figure this out, but I feel I am not there. In a way, I am asking for a 'best practice' in detail.

Thank you for reading and making it this far.

If, in order to give me some ideas, you need more info, feel free to ask.

Best answer
  1. Open Studio One, and create a New Song.
  2. In the Song window, press "T" to Add Tracks.
  3. In the Add Tracks settings window, choose the following settings.
  • Type: Audio Tracks
  • Count: 6 - This will create 6 mono tracks
  • Format: Mono
  • Input: Choose Input 1 for the RM32
  • (Optional) Place a check mark beside Ascending if you have 6 separate inputs going. Otherwise un-check Ascending, so all the tracks will use Input 1.
To record, simply arm the tracks you want to record. Record the parts. Afterwards, disarm those tracks and arm the next track you want to record.
