I am currently building a new windows computer to use primarily for 3D animation and music production with Studio One (recent user from Sonar).

I am planning on using the ASUS PRIME Z370-A motherboard which has onboard audio, information states: Realtek S1220A 8-channel high definition audio CODEC featuring Crystal Sound 3.

I assume I still will need a sound card? What would be an effective sound card to work with Studio One (mainly home recording and virtual instrument work - not setting up a professional studio)?

I currently have a USB audio interface (mAudio FastTrack) and may purchase a new Presonus AudioBox.
Thank you for any advice.

I figured it would be when recording, however, would there need to be a sound card for playing back when the audio interface is not hooked up? Wasn't sure if the on board audio had the necessary drivers for Studio One to process.

I usually only keep the interface connected while recording.
