Are updates free in studio one? If not how does it work?

as long as the current version is supported , yes.

just use the "update now" when it appear on top in the home screen

(exemple : we are currently in "studio one 3" and all update release from the beginning 3.0 are free. we are now on v3.5.5 )

nearly 3 years of support !!
