It appears that I need to patch a source as an input source in order to add it to a DCA Group. After the input source is added to the DCA Group, can I remove the patch? In other words, do all input sources that are parts of DCA Groups need to remain assigned to inputs (and take of one of the 16/24/32 faders)?

Yes. You are assigning the channel to the DCA, not the input patch source.
