This was added in Studio One 5.1.0. Thank you very much to everyone who supported this request  and to PreSonus for implementing this great feature!

---

I would like to suggest a feature that always records the MIDI data of an armed track in a buffer on playback. So when you are jamming along with a song or tweaking some filters but forgot to press record you can still retrieve the data after you stopped playback. In Cubase, Tracktion/Waveform, Samplitude & Live it's called Retrospective record, and in Logic it's called Capture Recording.

Examples of seven DAWs with retrospective MIDI record.

Cubase

Cubase 10.5+ (improved retrospective record version)

Logic

Samplitude

Tracktion

Live

Pro Tools

Digital Performer

closed with the note: Feature complete!

Would REALLY love this feature (Cubase style) when I’m doing sound design. Sometimes I’m messing with a sound or recreating something, playing random keys on a Scale-playing or generative plugins like Instascale and I’ll go “oh wow that sounded interesting, I’d love to save that for later” and ... can’t.

Digital Performer 10.1 just added this feature, so Presonus should be able to do it also. DP's version even works while stopped. It's very handy. I often hit a"perfect" idea while improvising or noodling and then cannot quite recapture it. It vanishes like a dream.

I'm deciding which DAW to use and this feature would be great, please add it to your already awesome DAW. From reading other comments I wonder why Presonus haven't added this feature like it is in Ableton for example. I assume they have some kind of business and marketing plan which they are not willing to openly discuss. They might save this feature for future upgrades purposely or have some deal with other companies or they are creating other more important features, who knows? However, they should communicate with the community about this :)

Such a shame that this option is still not available for the MIDI part.....

Please PreSonus make this happen!

After using this feature in Ableton, it has become a core litmus test for me of whether I can use a DAW.  It totally changed my workflow for MIDI.

This isn't a "nice to have" feature; it's fundamental.

I purchased Studio One Pro only yesterday and that's the feature I instantly started missing (coming from Live 10).

Please make it happen! :)

I just jammed out the SICKEST violin melody for my track. I was feeling the flow of the music rather than using my brain to create it. Sad to say... it's gone. Forever.

Presonus, PLEASE! For the love of all that is good and holy in the eyes of the music gods, give us this feature so that we can stop saying "Studio One is great, "but"..."

Stay safe, everyone.

Whoever marked this with a "best answer" needs to unmark it.... almost 5 years and no materialization of this features in Studio One 5.

This is a REAL NEED for composers and musicians. Even just as recordists, when you're cuing someone up at the studio and they "practice" along and do something insanely cool by accident... you need to be able to save it. In every other DAW, you can.

This FR has over 500 votes positive. It's from nearly 5 years ago. It's time the devs have a look.

I just installed Version 5.  But I'm so disappointed that this feature is still not implemented.  Really I am. That means I have to continue using my crude workaround (Creator synced to S1) to capture those amazing performances that always happen BEFORE you actually decide to officially record a MIDI track.  Anyway, thanks for the other lifesaver, i.e. capturing console and mix settings.

I really hope to see this feature in the next update for v5.x

This would make my life so easy, to try things on the fly without actually hitting record button.

Come on, please add this feature already.. I mostly stopped using S1 for composing, and it's because of this reason only. It also is the only reason why I didn't upgrade since Version 3. And I don't plan on updating, as long as this feature is missing. Because it's mind numbing how many good Ideas I lost due the lack of this feature. My head will always be like "why didn't i press record". AND the feature would save me from recording tons of useless stuff (If I use S1, I will often just record the midi, in case something great happens, which results in countless hours of mediocre midi recordings stacking up. It's really a dealbreaker for anyone who is composing, hence most DAWs added it in the last years, I guess. It's sad, because S1 is totally my preferred DAW, if it wasn't for this. The updates are good and everything, but this is requested for so long by so many people, it's dissapointing by now. Especially because you always say how you have implemented a lot of user requests in the new versions. That's it, I needed to get this out upon seeing this is still not implemented in Ver5.

I agree, this is a shame for PreSonus - 5 years and nothing? the retrospecive recording for audio is ready, but (simplest) for MIDI not? Version 5 should have this feature!
