DX7 mk1 with 22VSL (Studio One 4 Artist)

Setup:

controller ("keyboard" in Studio One): Arturia Essentials Keylab 49 (connected via USB)

external device ("instrument" in Studio One): mk1 Yamaha DX7 (connected to MIDI IN/OUT of 22VSL)

interface; Presonus 22VSL (USB to DAW)

I have everything physically connected correctly, and all is well until I stop playback or edit a note on the Studio One piano roll. Then I have to click "reconnect" in the Studio One options menu. Why is it disconnecting?

Is it a must that an audio track's input be assigned to the midi track just for playback and editing?

The DX7 is the only synth that I have that disconnects like this. Is the weak midi implementation of that 1983 synth my problem? Can I stop or filter certain messages to/from it to/from the 22VSL? I'm not sending midi timecode or anything. None of those boxes are checked.
