I have bought a 24R to use as a digital stagebox for our 32.4.2ai which has an AVB option card which we bought from another church last year. Universal control tells me that both boxes firmware is up to date but I am not able to set the 24R as a stagebox.

No, the AI consoles can not use any Series III products over AVB.
