Hello,

My name is Kevin I just bought a Roland TD-17 KVX kit.  I wanted to know is it possible to use it to trigger the sound in the Impact XT? I saw that someone else asked a similar question but didn't get an answer.  Please let know if this possible and some interaction on how to make it happen.

Respectfully,

Kevin.

Yes, your Roland Drum Kit comes with the TD-17 module.  The TD-17 module has a 5-pin MIDI output jack and a USB jack.  If you have an audio interface with a 5-pin MIDI input jack you will be able to connect your Roland Drum Kit to Studio One to trigger the pads in Impact XT using a 5-pin MIDI cable.  You can also connect the TD-17 to your computer and Studio One using USB.  Regardless of whether you use 5-pin MIDI or USB, successfully configuring the two to work together requires moderate to advanced knowledge of MIDI channels and MIDI note numbers.  You will need to configure your TD-17 to ensure that each pad transmits on the correct MIDI channel and MIDI note number to trigger the corresponding sample pads in Impact XT.

For instance, if you want your Roland Drum Kit kick pedal to trigger sample pad C1 in Impact XT, you need to ensure that the TD-17 module is configured to transmit kick drum hits as the MIDI note number Studio One and Impact XT interpret at note C1.  You will then need to configure all of the pads and cymbals in your TD-17 module to ensure that they transmit on the MIDI note numbers that trigger the pads in Impact XT that you want.  Editing your pad configuration in the TD-17 to trigger the sample pads in Impact XT is probably easier than reassigning the samples in Impact XT to new notes since all of the Impact XT kits are already assigned to sample pads, but you could just figure out which Roland pad triggers which Impact XT pad and then reassign the pads in Impact XT to new notes.

The other part of the configuration requires creating an input device in Studio One in the Studio One->Options->External Devices configuration menu.  There you need to insure that the input device configuration you create for the TD-17 module and the MIDI data that will flow into Studio One from your TD-17 module is received correctly.

Long story short: it can be done but it requires work.
