If I am content with the current version and no longer feel the need to upgrade, do I still have to pay if I want to keep the software?

Yes.  You have to pay to keep any software licensed under Sphere, whether or not you intend to upgrade.  If you do not pay, your S1 account will revert to whatever last version you had that was permanently licensed.
