On slower quiet songs as the song fades out, the automation drops out abruptly. I have to manually write it in and I'm not always smooth enough.

Sorry you are experiencing this. However, this is by design to let the fader work like on an Analog Mixing desk.

But you can play with the automation curve to get a better effect.
