A band member owns our 24.4.2 and we've recently needed to send it in for repairs.  The repair invoice states that the converters on a number of channels were replaced.  I'd like to know how these came to be damaged so we can avoid this in the future.  From what I think I understand, the channels are buffered.  Do I need to worry about putting a pad in a line level input?  Is there other ways they can be damaged?

There's little if any buffering on the inserts. Be careful when you use those, which includes accidentally plugging into an insert where you meant to plug into a line input. On the line inputs you should be good.
