I have tried mapping my AKAI APC40 as a keyboard with split channels but it is not learning the knobs correctly. When pressing the the first button of the track "Activators" row on the APC40, it will populate the learn window in S1 3 with eight controls designated to the "Device Control" section of the APC40.

Sorry to hear about the recent issues you have been experiencing.

You will also need to create a New Control Surface in Options/Preferences(OSX) > External Devices. This is the one that is needed to map controls. 

In the end you will have; 

1. A New Keyboard for your pads.
2. A New Control Surface for the controls.
