why are my audio devices not activated?

I can't hear or record anything through my mic or headphones. when I look at the audio I/O it shows that there is sound going through the mic,but it doesn't light up like it's activated. And in outputs it shows my headphones, but its also not activated. The software has access to the mic and everything, but the "M"s never light up.
