Can I use a separate firewire interface to add additional input channels to the RM16AI?

No.  Different devices are designed differently and work in their own specific ways.  

Chaining firewire devices is possible with some devices but only if they are devices within the same family or they are same devices and if the drivers support chaining/cascading of these devices.
