A friend sent me a bass track for a project that I am working on, all acoustic guitar and vocal, no midi, and so forth.  I would like to transform that bass track to an instrument track and try out different instruments or types of basses available,  Can I do that?

Let's say I am recording a Fender Bass, direct input.  After doing so I wan to change the sound to the stand-up bass or something else.  I thought I might be able to select Transform to instrument track but it is greyed out.  No can do.  Not a big issue but would like to play around with it if I can.

The function in SO called transform to instrument is only for things that started as an instrument & were transformed to audio (to save CPU)

What you need is to turn the audio performance into midi so you can audition different bass parts.  Melodyne (awesome) can get you the midi (Melodyne Essentials is included with some versions of SO) as well as other third party VSTs like the wonderful EZBass.  Good luck.
